This event has been approved by the Early Learning and Child Care Board for 1.50 professional development training hours.

Payment Policy:

The ECDA's payment policy for all Professional Development is that fees must be paid prior to attending*. The final date to make your payment is one week prior to the start date of the event, unless otherwise communicated (i.e. council or board run centres for cheque approval/signature, would be the exceptions). If payment is not received, before the event payment deadline, you will not be permitted to attend.

In the past, exceptions have been made by the ECDA, but with our growing membership, it has become increasingly difficult to manage. We thank you for your understanding and your commitment to your ongoing Professional Development. The ECDA.

*If you are mailing a cheque, please be aware you should allow a few days ahead of the deadline for it to be received by the ECDA office.

An Introduction to Human Rights on PEI (Charlottetown)

*Please note this session is for Directors, it will also be offered in the evening for educators in the new year!

The Prince Edward Island Human Rights Commission information session will introduce participants to the Commission, answering the question: Who are we and what do we do? It will also outline what rights are protected by the PEI Human Rights Act, and what can be done if those rights are violated. We will also touch on topics such as discrimination, harassment, and equality.

In this presentation we will cover:

  • What the PEI Human Rights commission does:
  • What discrimination is and what it looks like in the workplace:
  • Characteristics that are protected in the workplace, such as:
    • Race
    • Gender
    • Disability
    • Age
    • Family/Marital status
  • What an Employer’s responsibility is toward their employees’ rights, and vice versa
  • Accommodating characteristics such as disability in the workplace
  • How to file a claim

At the end of the presentation, all participants should have a clear understanding of their

rights in the workplace, and what to do if they think their rights have been violated.

Facilitator Biography: Shaun Purves

Shaun Purves is the Community Outreach and Education Officer for the Commission. He is new to PEI, having been a librarian for 9 years in Ontario, and a public-school teacher for a decade in BC. He is committed to helping all Canadians live their best lives in this country.

Commission Bio:

The Prince Edward Island Human Rights Commission (PEIHRC) is an independent agency that is responsible for administering and enforcing the Prince Edward Island Human Rights Act. The Act prohibits unequal and prejudicial treatment in certain areas on the basis of certain personal characteristics, also known as prohibited grounds of discrimination. A team of dedicated staff members are responsible for the daily operations of the Commission including education, investigation, complaint resolution, and advising government.

Please note: failure to attend will result in a $20 Admin fee being applied to your account, and you must pay this prior to attending any future free sessions. This policy has been implemented due to many no-shows at events. We value our facilitators and their time, and we often have to cap session capacity so not showing up for an event impacts others who may have wanted to attend.
